World Environment Day 2025 Clean-Up with MRCT, Durbanville Lions Club & Fisantekraal Primary

World Environment Day

On World Environment Day, 5 June 2025, the Mosselbank River Conservation Team (MRCT) hosted a successful community clean-up in celebration of this globally significant day. In a heartening show of community spirit and environmental responsibility, the Durbanville Lions Club and enthusiastic Grade 4 learners from Fisantekraal Primary School joined MRCT to make a tangible impact in our local environment.

Grade 4 learners from Fisantekraal Primary collected 86 kg of litter.

Together, this passionate group collected 86 kilograms of litter from the Mosselbank River and surrounding open spaces. The waste included plastic packaging, wrappers, glass bottles, and other general debris polluting our natural spaces. The clean-up not only improved the local environment but also raised awareness among young learners and residents about the importance of protecting our ecosystems.

Why World Environment Day Matter

World Environment Day, led by the United Nations, is the largest global platform for environmental outreach. It is celebrated by millions across the globe every year. This year’s theme—“Beat Plastic Pollution”—reminds us of the critical and growing challenge that plastic waste presents to our rivers, oceans, and communities.

Plastic pollution affects every corner of the planet. It chokes waterways, harms wildlife, and even enters our food systems. Community clean-ups like this one are essential in combatting these effects while educating the next generation about sustainable practices.

A Community United

MRCT extends heartfelt thanks to all volunteers, especially our partners—the Durbanville Lions Club and the educators and learners of Fisantekraal Primary—for their enthusiastic participation. This initiative is proof that when communities unite, real change is possible.

Let’s continue to take action beyond just one day a year. Every small effort counts in our shared mission to protect our environment and beat plastic pollution—one river, one park, one clean-up at a time.

Follow MRCT for future events and opportunities to get involved in preserving the natural beauty of Mosselbank River and its surroundings.
