World Environment Day is a global reminder that caring for our planet starts with the actions we take in our own communities. This year's theme encouraged individuals and organisations to come together to restore ecosystems, reduce pollution, and create a more sustainable future—values that were brought to life through a wonderful partnership between the Ackermans team and the Mosselbank River Conservation Team (MRCT).

As part of Ackermans' Ububele Kindness and Generosity Initiative, members of their team joined MRCT volunteers for a hands-on morning of environmental action along the Mosselbank River. Together, the two teams quickly planted 22 indigenous trees, helping to strengthen the river's ecosystem and create valuable habitat for local wildlife.

The species planted were carefully selected for their ecological value and included:

  • Syzygium cordatum (Waterberry)

  • Olea europaea subsp. africana (African Wild Olive)

  • Buddleja saligna (False Olive)

  • Acacia galpinii syn. Senegalia galpinii (Monkey Thorn)

The team's efforts didn't stop there. After the planting was complete, everyone rolled up their sleeves for a litter clean-up, removing an impressive 21 kg of waste from the surrounding area. Every bag collected helps prevent pollution from entering the river system and contributes to a healthier environment for both people and wildlife.

Reflecting on the day's activities, Jody Beaumont Strydom, Data Analyst at Ackermans, shared the motivation behind their involvement: "As a Data team, we've become increasingly aware of the environmental impact associated with the work we do, particularly the energy and computing resources required to support our operations. We'd really like to take a step toward giving back in a meaningful way."

The MRCT extends its sincere thanks to Ackermans for their enthusiastic participation, generosity and commitment to making a tangible difference. Partnerships like these demonstrate how businesses and community organisations can work together to create lasting environmental benefits while inspiring others to take action.

Every tree planted, every kilogram of waste removed and every act of kindness contributes to a healthier river and a more resilient environment for future generations.
