The Mosselbank River in Fisantekraal is more than just a waterway; it is a vital ecosystem supporting local wildlife and the community. Over time, this river has faced challenges such as pollution, invasive plants, and erosion. The Mosselbank River Conservation Team (MRCT), a group of dedicated volunteers, is working hard to restore and protect this natural resource. This Earth Day, MRCT invites local government, businesses, NGO's and community members to join a special Tree Planting Marathon on 18 April 2026 aimed at planting 100 indigenous trees along the riverbank in a single day.
This event is not only about planting trees but also about building a stronger connection between people and nature. It offers a chance to contribute to biodiversity, improve riverbank stability, and create habitats for birds and insects. Here’s everything you need to know about this exciting initiative and how you can get involved.

The Impact of Tree Planting on River Ecosystems
Planting indigenous trees along riverbanks offers multiple environmental benefits:
Increased Biodiversity - Native trees provide food and shelter for local birds, insects, and other wildlife. This supports a balanced ecosystem and helps endangered species.
Climate Resilience - Trees absorb carbon dioxide, helping to mitigate climate change. They also moderate local temperatures and improve air quality.
Enhanced Community Well-being - Green spaces along rivers offer recreational opportunities and improve mental health for residents.
By planting 100 indigenous trees in one day, MRCT aims to create a lasting green corridor that benefits both nature and people.
.
Adopt-a-Tree Partnership Model
MRCT has introduced an “Adopt-a-Tree” model to encourage community and business involvement. Here’s how it works:
Individuals or organisations sponsor one or more indigenous trees.
Sponsors are invited to join the planting day and help plant their adopted trees.
This shared ownership fosters collaboration and a deeper connection to the river’s restoration.
This model has proven effective in other conservation projects by building long-term commitment and pride among participants.
How You Can Support the Event
MRCT welcomes support from businesses, organisations, and community groups. Here are ways to contribute:
Donate Indigenous Trees - Various sizes of indigenous trees are needed to meet the 100-tree goal.
Provide Compost or Soil Amendments - Healthy soil is essential for tree survival and growth.
Supply Refreshments for Volunteers - Items like hotdogs and cool drinks will keep energy levels high during the marathon.
Supporting this event is an opportunity to make a tangible difference in local conservation and demonstrate environmental leadership.
The Long-Term Vision for Mosselbank River
The Tree Planting Marathon is part of a broader vision to restore the Mosselbank River as a thriving natural asset. MRCT aims to:
Continue regular clean-ups and invasive species management
Monitor tree growth and river health over time
Engage schools and youth groups in environmental education
Build partnerships with local government and environmental organisations
By planting trees and fostering community involvement, MRCT hopes to create a sustainable legacy that benefits future generations.
