Don’t Waste the Opportunity — Clean, Recycle & Act!
Clean-up and Recycling Week (14-20 September) in South Africa is an important reminder that every one of us has a role to play in protecting our communities and environment. The waste we produce does not simply disappear when it leaves our homes — if not managed responsibly, it can end up on our streets, in rivers and waterways, and ultimately in our oceans.
The MRCT has made a meaningful contribution to keeping our environment clean by helping to divert litter and waste away from rivers, waterways and surrounding communities. Through clean-up activities and community participation, these efforts help protect our natural environment while creating greater awareness of the importance of responsible waste management.
Recycling is another important part of the solution. By separating recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and cans from general waste, we can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. Recycling also allows valuable materials to be recovered and reused rather than unnecessarily discarded.
But lasting change starts with everyday choices. Residents are encouraged to become more conscious of the waste they generate — reducing unnecessary consumption, reusing items where possible, separating recyclables and disposing of waste responsibly. Small actions, when taken by many people, can have a significant impact.
This Clean-up and Recycling Week, we encourage residents to move from awareness to action by becoming active citizens in their communities.
One great way to get involved is by joining the World Cleanup Day event in Fisantekraal on Saturday, 19 September 2026. It is an opportunity to come together, take pride in our community, remove litter from our environment and demonstrate that we all have a part to play in creating cleaner, healthier and more sustainable neighbourhoods.
